Selection Procedures

In the spring of each year, the Segula Chapter of the National Honor Society will invite candidates for induction into the National Honor Society. Once invited, applications for induction will be distributed and selection procedures will commence.

Each candidate for membership in the National Honor Society will be required to demonstrate outstanding qualities of character, service, leadership and scholarship. The method used to select members of the Segula Chapter requires an accumulation of seven out of a possible eleven points for these qualities, determined as follows”

Leadership
(one point required, two points possible)

Candidates are required to submit two leadership forms from two adults who will attest to the fact that the candidates exhibit qualities of leadership and service to the community (both inside and outside of school). Specific questions will be answered on each form by means of a point scale, and the adult should comment upon the student’s involvement in helping to direct or motivate others, providing a positive role model and taking initiative in group situations. Letters may be submitted from staff members at Hillel Yeshiva, supervisors at work or in community organizations, or others who are in a position to observe the above listed qualities. Both leadership forms in addition to a formal leadership position in a school or community organization, a sport team, or other club, during high school will earn two points.

All High School teachers will be asked to fill out a character evaluation form for all students invited to apply for induction in the National Honor Society. The questions will deal with the candidates’ reliability, self-control, honesty, and sincerity. Students with good character should demonstrate an appreciation of knowledge and a serious attitude toward their studies. Students ought to be willing to help others and work for the good of the class. They should exhibit initiative and confidence, and have a positive influence on their classmates. Candidates will start with both of the possible points. A negative comment will reduce this to one point. Two negative comments will result in no character points and will disqualify the student from becoming a member of the Segual Chapter. Students who have been in serious violation of school rules, including suspension and documented cheating or of civil laws in the calendar immediately prior to becoming a candidate are automatically disqualified.
